Hello, Hannah here, a few weeks ago I decided to try out some new chunky yarn from Yarnspirations* called Sugar Bush Chill and I’ve been having fun experimenting to see which stitches look best with a heavier weight yarn!

Sugar Bush Chill is a boutique yarn, so it can be a little hard to find, especially with all the yarn shortages going on right now, but we’ve heard that there should be more of this yarn in stock on yarnspirations.com in the next few weeks, which I hope is the case because I really love working with it and I’d love to get some more! But even if you don’t have this yarn, I think these four stitches will look great with any bulky yarn you can find!

Half Double Crochet Slip Stitch (Back Loop Only)

How to work the stitch

Chain any number. Start in 3rd chain from hook and yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop and pull directly through two loops on hook. On next row, work stitch in same manner, but insert hook into back loop of stitch.

Cowl Pattern

Finished size appx. 21 in x 7.5 in

Materials: 2 skeins Sugar Bush Chill in Icebox Teal, 9.00mm crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape

Chain 50 (or a chain that measures 21 inches)

ROW 1: Starting in 3rd chain from hook, work a HDC slip stitch into each chain (yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop and pull directly through two loops on hook). Chain 1 and turn.

ROW 2: Work a HDC slip stitch into each stitch across the row, inserting your hook into the back loop only of each stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until your cowl measures appx 7.5 inches or your desired height. When you finish and tie off, leave yourself about a 20 inch tail that you can use with a tapestry needle to sew the two sides of your rectangle together. After its sewn together, weave in all ends, then turn the cowl inside out and enjoy!

Crumpled Griddle Stitch

How to work the stitch

Chain an even number. Start in the 2nd chain from the hook and work a SC. Work a DC into the next chain. Continue alternating SC and DC to the end of the chain (you should end with a SC). Chain 1 and turn. Work the next row in the same manner, alternating SC and DC. A SC should always be worked into the top of a SC and a DC should always be worked into the top of a DC.

Finished size appx. 7 in x 24 in

Materials: 2 skeins Sugar Bush Chill in Mountie Mango, 9.00mm crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape

Chain 50.

ROW 1: Start in the 2nd chain from the hook and work a SC. Work a DC into the next chain. Continue alternating SC and DC to the end of the chain (you should end with a SC). Chain 1 and turn.

ROW 2: Work a SC into the top of the first SC of the row below. Work a DC into the top of the DC of the row below. Continue alternating SC and DC across the row. A SC should always be worked into the top of a SC and a DC should always be worked into the top of a DC. End the row with a SC and chain 1 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until your cowl measures appx. 7 inches or your desired height. Front Two Loop Half Double Crochet

In the next row, work a HDC into each stitch, inserting your hook up through the front two loops of each stitch.

Materials: 2 skeins Sugar Bush Chill in Yukon Gold, 9.00mm crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape

Chain 50.

ROW 1: Start in the 3rd chain from the hook and work a HDC into each chain (yarn over, insert hook and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through three loops). Chain 2 and turn.

ROW 2: (Turning chain does not count as a stitch.) Work a HDC into each stitch, inserting your hook up through the front two loops of each stitch. Chain 2 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until your cowl measures appx. 7.5 inches or your desired height. When you finish and tie off, leave yourself about a 20 inch tail that you can use with a tapestry needle to sew the two sides of your rectangle together. After its sewn together, weave in all ends, then turn the cowl inside out and enjoy!

Moss Stitch

How to work the stitch

Chain an even number. Start in 2nd chain from hook, and work SC, CH 1 into every other stitch. End the row with a SC, then chain 2 and turn. Work the next row in the same manner, working SC, CH 1 into ever other chain space.

Finished size appx. 23 in x 7.5 in

Materials: 2 skeins Sugar Bush Chill in Fire in the Sky, 10.00mm crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors, measuring tape

Chain 60.

ROW 1: Starting in the 4th chain from the hook, work a SC, CH 1. Skip the next chain then work SC, CH 1. Continue working SC, CH 1 in every other chain. You should end with one SC in the last chain. CH 2 and turn.

ROW 2: Work SC, CH 1 into the chain one space of the row below. Skip the next stitch, then work SC, CH 1 in the next chain one space. Continue working SC, CH 1 into the all the chain one spaces from the row below. End with a SC that is between the last stitch and the turning chain of the row below. Chain 2 and turn.
